Palm Desert runs on two calendars, and so do its pools.
From roughly November through April the city fills up. Houses that were quiet all summer have people in them. The spa runs most evenings. The heater works nightly. Guests come through. Pools get used the way pools are supposed to be used.
Then it flips. By July a large share of those same houses are empty, the pool is running on a timer, the water is 90-something degrees on its own, and nobody has looked at the equipment pad in six weeks.
That split is the single most useful thing to understand about pool repair in Palm Desert, because failures do not distribute evenly across the year. They cluster at the two handoffs.
The November cluster. Everything that quietly broke or degraded over the summer gets discovered in the same three weeks. Heaters that will not fire. Spa blowers that seized. Automation that lost its settings. Lights that went out in August with nobody there to notice. This is our busiest stretch in this city and it is entirely predictable.
The June cluster. Equipment that got run hard all season now faces the hardest months with no one watching. Pumps that were already noisy in April fail in July. Autofill valves stick open and nobody sees the water bill until it arrives. Filters load and stay loaded.
Anyone who has worked here a while plans around those two handoffs. The practical version for a homeowner is simple: get the pad looked at before you leave, and again before you come back. Those two visits prevent most of the expensive surprises we get called into.
Palm Desert also has a distinctive housing mix a large stock of established mid-century properties alongside country club communities and newer construction which means this city generates more remodel and resurfacing work than almost anywhere else we go.

The November list
Heaters
The single most common Palm Desert call, and it arrives in a cluster. A heater that sat unused through summer faces ignition faults, a mineral-loaded exchanger, dust in the burner tray or a gas supply issue on a spa that never quite reaches temperature. See pool heater repair in La Quinta.
Automation
Pentair, Hayward and Jandy systems, plus remotes and spa-side controls. Boards and panels sit in an outdoor enclosure through a desert summer, which is hard on electronics. Settings also get lost, which looks like failure and is not. . See pool automation repair in La Quinta.
Lighting
A light that failed in August gets found in November. Niche work, gasket work and LED conversions. This is the one on the list homeowners should not attempt, because pool lighting and bonding are governed by electrical code for good reason. See pool light repair in La Quinta.
The June list
Pumps
Anything noisy or marginal in spring will not survive an unwatched summer. Replacing a failing motor before you leave costs less than discovering it in August. See pool pump repair in La Quinta.
Leaks
A slow leak in an occupied house gets noticed. In an empty one it runs for months, which is how a small repair becomes a water bill plus a soil problem. See pool leak detection in La Quinta.
Year-round
Filters, salt systems, plumbing, crack repair and equipment pad rebuilds. Palm Desert sits in Southern California Edison territory, so the rate and rebate picture on an equipment upgrade differs from the east valley.
Diagnostics are $150, credited toward an approved repair. CSLB License 994121 Workmanship terms are 1 year warranty.

As a swimming pool contractor in Palm Desert, most of what we do is renewal rather than new construction, because the city already has its pools — many of them built decades ago.
What that work looks like here:
Mid-century properties. Distinctive shapes and proportions worth keeping. The right move is usually resurfacing, new tile and a modern equipment pad, leaving the character alone. Replacing one of these with a generic rectangle is a loss
Country club and gated communities. Architectural review, scheduled work windows, noise limits and access rules. These projects run on somebody else's calendar as much as ours.
1980s and 90s tracts. Surfaces at end of life and equipment well past it. Straightforward, high-value remodels.
Newer construction. Additions rather than renewal — water features, fire features, shade, automation.
City permits go through the Palm Desert Department of Building and Safety, with single-family setbacks of 25 feet front, 20 feet rear and 5 feet at interior sides with a 10-foot aggregate, plus Title 24 energy documentation and water management review on construction submittals. Those numbers constrain where a pool and its equipment can sit on a tight lot.

Tile contractor work matters disproportionately in Palm Desert because of the mid-century stock. Original waterline tile on a 1960s pool is frequently a pattern nobody manufactures now, and it is often the best-looking thing in the yard.
So the order of questions changes here:
Can it be cleaned? Sound tile under heavy calcium usually can.
Can it be restored? Scale removed, failed grout replaced, loose pieces reset with tile salvaged from hidden areas. This keeps original material that cannot be bought.
Does it need replacing? Only when the glaze has etched through or sections have gone hollow across the run.
Getting that order wrong costs people something they cannot get back. Plenty of contractors quote replacement first because it is the bigger job.

Working as a concrete contractor and general contractor in Palm Desert covers deck construction and concrete pouring, pavers and coping, block walls and gates, shade structures, outdoor kitchens, fire features, drainage, and the gas and electrical runs feeding them.
Two things come up here more than elsewhere. Established properties often have original decks that have moved over decades, so crack and joint assessment comes before any resurfacing decision. And drainage is a design requirement on construction submittals rather than an afterthought — storm runoff has to be handled on site, which affects deck grading and where hardscape can go.

Hot tub repair service is close to a seasonal business in Palm Desert. The first genuinely cool evening arrives, half the city reaches for a spa nobody has touched since spring, and the phone tells us about it.
What we find: heaters that will not stage, scaled elements, failed flow switches, blowers that seized, control boards that sat through a 115-degree summer in an outdoor enclosure, and spillway seals on attached gunite spas that have let water behind the tile.
The cheap version of this call is a pre-season check in October instead of a repair in December. The parts are the same; the wait is not.

We come west out of 52115 Avenida Bermudas in La Quinta, up Washington or Highway 111.
The El Paseo district and the streets behind it. Established properties, mature landscaping, and pools with genuine design history. Careful work, and often tight access.
The Fred Waring Drive corridor. A long east-west spine through a wide mix of housing eras, which means a wide mix of equipment ages on the same street.
Toward Highway 74 and the south edge. Hillside lots, elevation changes, and the drainage and deck questions that come with them.
The north side toward Country Club Drive. Gated communities, architectural review, scheduled work windows and noise considerations.
Citywide: hard water and calcium like everywhere here, a seasonal occupancy split that drives the repair calendar, an aging but architecturally valuable pool stock, and enough shade and mature planting in the older neighborhoods to change how decks and surfaces weather.
If you are heading out for the summer or coming back for the season, the pad check before the handoff is the cheapest call you will make all year.

Have the pad looked at before you go rather than after you get back. Marginal equipment does not survive an unwatched desert summer, and an autofill stuck open runs for months without anyone seeing it. A check on each end of the empty stretch prevents most of what we get called into.
Because it sat unused for five months and then got asked to work every evening. Ignition components, gas valves and exchangers all take that transition poorly. It rarely broke in November that is just when you found out
We would counsel against it in most cases. Mid-century pools here have proportions and details that are hard to reproduce and genuinely valuable. Resurfacing, new tile and modern equipment give you a current pool without erasing what makes it interesting.
Probably not with matching material, which is exactly why we look at restoration first — scale removed, grout repaired, loose pieces reset with tile salvaged from places nobody looks. Replacement is the last answer, not the first quote.
No, it is routine here. Municipal permits and private architectural review are separate tracks, and a city permit does not satisfy a committee. Both get handled, and work windows and noise rules get built into the schedule.
It can affect rates and rebates on a pump or heater upgrade compared with the east valley, which runs on a different utility.
Often not. Power events and battery-backed memory are a common cause, and restoring the configuration is far cheaper than replacing a board. We check that before quoting hardware.
We would rather you did not. Pool lighting and bonding fall under electrical code requirements that exist because of what water and electricity do together. It is one of the few genuinely dangerous do-it-yourself jobs at a pool.
Less than the numbers you will read from mild-climate sources, because heat, hard water and heavy chemical demand all work against it. We will give you a realistic expectation for your specific finish and water rather than a brochure figure.
Palm Desert single-family setbacks run 25 feet front, 20 feet rear and 5 feet at interior sides with a 10-foot aggregate across both. On a tight lot those decide the pool and where the equipment can sit. We work that out before any design.
Regularly. Those projects run on scheduled work windows, defined access and noise limits, and planning around them is part of the job rather than an obstacle.
