What is pool remodeling in La Quinta, CA?

Pool remodeling in La Quinta, CA means updating an existing pool instead of replacing it. A typical pool remodeling job swaps waterline tile, coping, and the interior plaster finish, then adds LED lighting, fresh decking, and variable-speed equipment. CV Pools has remodeled Coachella Valley pools since 1998. Estimates are free. Call (760) 619-2409.

Open the slider. Walk out. Look at your pool for ten seconds without being nice about it.

Most pools in this valley do not look old because they are falling apart. They look old because of five specific things, and pool remodeling in La Quinta, CA almost always starts with the same short list. Here it is.

1. The tile band. Six-inch tile in beige, tan, or a blue-and-white pattern with little fish or waves on it. Add a white calcium shelf sitting on top of it from our hard water, and the whole waterline reads as dated before anyone even looks at the water.

2. The coping. Cantilevered concrete with a rolled bullnose edge and a gray-brown cast. If your coping color matches your 1990s deck exactly, that is the era it came from.

3. The deck color. Salmon. Adobe pink. Dusty peach. Terra cotta cool deck with the little knockdown texture. It was everywhere here for twenty years, and the desert sun has faded it unevenly since.

4. The light. One big round incandescent fixture on the deep end wall, throwing a yellow-white circle that makes the plaster look gray at night. Newer pools glow. Older pools spotlight.

5. The equipment noise. If you can hear the pump from the patio table, it is a single-speed motor. Quiet is the sound of modern equipment, and it is also the sound of a much smaller electric bill.

Four of those five are cosmetic. One is mechanical. Almost every homeowner who calls CV Pools about pool remodeling names at least three of them in the first two minutes.

Here is the part most contractors will not put on a website. Pool remodeling is not one price. It is a menu, and you can order off it in any order you like. We price each stage on its own so you can see what each piece actually costs and decide what makes the cut this year. Nobody at CV Pools will tell you that you must do all of it. Free estimates on every stage, with a written scope, stage by stage, and nothing bundled to hide a number.

Do it in the right order or you pay twice

This is the single most useful thing on this page. Pool remodeling has an order. Skip it and you will tear out work you just paid for. Every pool remodeling job we run in La Quinta follows this sequence.

1. Fix leaks and cracks first. Plaster goes on last for a reason. If the shell is losing water or has a structural crack, that gets found and repaired before any finish touches it.

2. Do the equipment pad next, or at least plan it. Plumbing changes at the pad are easiest when the pool is already down. New pump, new filter, salt cell, heater: decide now.

3. Then coping. Coping sits on top of the bond beam and under the deck edge. It cannot go in after the deck without cutting the deck.

4. Then tile. Tile sets against the coping. Set tile first and you will chip it putting coping in.

5. Then the deck. The deck butts up to the finished coping line. Pour it before and the elevations never look right.

6. Then the interior finish. Plaster or pebble goes on close to last so no one drops a coping stone into a fresh surface.

7. Fill, start up, and balance. The first two weeks of water chemistry decide how the finish looks for the next decade.

Lights and automation can slot in almost anywhere, as long as the conduit and bonding get checked while the water is out.

Most people say pool remodeling. The trade word is renovation, and it means the same thing: bringing an older pool back to current without rebuilding the shell.

Our swimming pool renovations package the stages above into one scheduled job with one crew. New interior finish, new tile and coping, updated lighting, modern equipment, refreshed decking. One permit set where the city needs one. One person answering your calls.

A renovation makes sense when your pool is structurally fine and simply looks its age. Around Palmilla and Cactus Flower we see a lot of pools built in the same window by the same builders, which means the same tile, the same coping profile, and the same plaster hitting the end of its life at roughly the same time. If your neighbor just did theirs, yours is probably due.

Swimming pool equipment repair

Pool remodeling is the right moment to deal with the pad, because the pool is already down and the plumbing is already open.

Our swimming pool equipment repair work covers pumps, filters, heaters, salt cells, timers, valves, actuators, and automation panels. Sometimes the honest answer is repair: a seal kit and bearings instead of a new motor. Sometimes it is replacement, and the electric bill makes that decision for you.

California requires variable-speed pumps on most replacements under Title 24 energy rules, so if your old single-speed motor is on its way out, the upgrade is likely coming regardless.

Diagnostic visits are $150 and credited toward the approved repair. Remodel estimates, including equipment upgrades, are free.

Tile replacement

Go tap your tile line. Knuckle on each piece, all the way around.

A solid tap with white crust on the face is usually a cleaning job. We bead blast the calcium off without wrecking the glaze. A hollow tap is different. Hollow means water already got behind the tile face, and cleaning it is money spent to delay the real repair. That is tile replacement.

During pool remodeling we pull the whole waterline band anyway, so this is the cheapest moment in a pool's life to change the look. New glass mosaic, porcelain, natural stone, or a clean modern six-inch, plus spillway tile, step markers, and raised bond beam faces if you have them.

Bring the samples outside before you choose. Desert light is brutally honest, and a tile that looked navy in a showroom can read black at 2 p.m. in Topaz.

Deck construction

The complaint we hear most in July is not about the water. It is that nobody can walk from the slider to the pool without hopping.

Deck construction during pool remodeling is where you fix that. Surface color and material change how hot a deck gets more than anything else. Light colors reflect. Dark colors hold heat. Dense stone stores it. Textured cool deck and lighter travertine both walk cooler than a dark stamped surface, and both cost less to live with than a deck you avoid five months a year.

Good deck work here also means drainage and joints. Our slabs move: heat expansion, cool winter nights, and soil that shifts in parts of the valley. Expansion joints in the right places are why one deck cracks in year three and the one next door does not.

We also handle the bits around the deck: walkways, equipment pads, raised planters, and the step down to the yard.

Swimming pool light repair

The light is the cheapest thing on this whole page and it changes the most at night.

Swimming pool light repair covers burned-out lamps, failed LED fixtures, water in the niche, corroded conduit, and bonding problems. During a remodel we test the circuit before anyone sells you a fixture, because a dead light is sometimes a dead breaker.

If you still have the original round incandescent, converting to color LED is the single best-value upgrade in pool remodeling. Less power, far longer lamp life, and a pool that actually looks like something after dark instead of a gray hole with a yellow spot in it.

Bonding and grounding around pool lights fall under California Electrical Code Article 680.

Swimming pool resurfacing

Run your hand along the step below the waterline. If it feels like a sidewalk, your finish is done.

Swimming pool resurfacing is the biggest single line in most pool remodeling budgets, and out here it comes due faster than the coast. Valley pools generally need it every 8 to 12 years. Heat, evaporation, hard fill water, and heavy chlorine demand all wear plaster faster than a mild climate does.

The process does not change much: drain, chip out the failed material, clean and prep the shell, apply a bond coat, apply the new finish, then fill immediately and hold the startup chemistry tight. Rushing the startup is how a beautiful new surface ends up mottled.

Signs you are past due: rough underfoot, gray blotching, exposed dark spots where the plaster wore through, chalky white residue on your feet, and chemical use that keeps climbing for no reason.

Remodeling

Plenty of pool remodeling projects do not stop at the coping line. That is where holding both the pool and general contractor licenses matters.

Remodeling at CV Pools also covers the yard around the water: shade structures, outdoor kitchens, fire features, fencing and gates, block walls, drainage, low-voltage lighting, and the gas and electrical runs that feed all of it. One crew, one schedule, one permit set, one phone number.

That single-contractor setup is the difference between a backyard that gets torn up once and a backyard that gets torn up three times over two years by three different trades who each blame the last one.

Choosing finishes and tile that survive hard water

Coachella Valley water is hard. Calcium is dissolved in it, the sun evaporates the water off, and the calcium stays behind. That is why there is a white shelf on your tile line and a chalky ring on your spa spillway.

That one fact should drive most of your pool remodeling finish choices.

Interior finishes, from softest to toughest:

White plaster. Cheapest, brightest, classic look. Shortest life here. Shows etching and mottling first.

Quartz. Plaster with quartz aggregate blended in. Harder surface, better color hold, more stain resistance than plain white.

Mini pebble and pebble. The longest-wearing option in this valley. Rougher underfoot, and it hides the scale line better than a smooth white surface ever will.

Tile that holds up: glass mosaic is chemically inert and shrugs off scale better than most materials, though it costs more. Good porcelain is the practical middle. Natural stone at the waterline is the one we talk people out of most often: porous stone and hard water are a bad marriage here.

Whatever you pick, plan on periodic bead blasting of the waterline. Calcium is not a defect in your remodel. It is our water, and it comes back.

Color guidance from a sample board in the sun beats a photo on a phone every single time.

What it is actually like to live through pool remodeling

Straight answer: the pool is empty, there is a dumpster, and for a few days it is loud.

Here is the honest sequence. Drain and demo make the most noise and the most dust. Chip-out is a jackhammer job. Then it goes quiet for a stretch while tile and coping get set, which is careful hand work. Deck work is loud again. The finish day is a big crew, in and out fast. Then the pool fills and someone comes back to balance the water.

Your gate gets used. Your side yard becomes a staging area. If you have dogs, we will talk about that on day one.

The snowbird schedule. Roughly half our pool remodeling work in La Quinta gets done between May and September for owners who are back east or up north. It is the smartest way to do it. You leave with an empty pool and a signed scope, and you come back in October to a finished backyard, with no dust, no noise, and no jackhammer outside your bedroom window.

We do this constantly for owners in Palmilla, Cactus Flower, Topaz, and out toward the Bermuda Dunes edge of our service area. You get photo updates at each stage and a call before any change to the written scope.

Pool remodeling questions La Quinta homeowners ask us every week

CV pools in Lauinta

What does a pool remodel cost in La Quinta?

It depends entirely on which stages you pick. Tile alone is a small job. Tile plus coping plus a pebble finish plus new decking and equipment is a large one. We price every stage separately so you can see the real numbers. Estimates are free and written.

Can I do the remodel in stages instead of all at once?

Yes, and a lot of our clients do. The rule is order, not budget. Coping before tile, tile before deck, finish last. If you plan the sequence up front, you can spread the work over two or three seasons without paying to redo anything.

How long will my pool be out of service?

That depends on scope, weather, inspections, and material lead times, so we will not hand you a promise on a website. What we will do is give you a written schedule at estimate time and tell you the day before each stage starts. Small tile jobs are short. Full remodels are not.

Do I have to replaster if I only want new tile?

No. Tile replacement is its own job and we do it by itself often. Two things to know: pulling the tile band means a drain-down anyway, and new bright tile against tired old plaster makes the plaster look worse than it did before. Many people see that and add the finish.

What pool finish lasts longest in our water?

Pebble and mini pebble, by a clear margin. The aggregate surface is harder than plaster, holds color longer, and hides the calcium line better. Quartz is the middle choice. Plain white plaster is the most affordable and the shortest-lived in Coachella Valley conditions.

Can you make my pool deck cooler to walk on?

Yes. Lighter colors, reflective surfaces, and the right material make a real difference. Textured cool deck and lighter travertine both walk cooler than dark stamped concrete. Shade over the main path helps more than anything. We will show you samples in direct sun before you commit.

Should I convert to salt while you are already here?

If you were already considering it, yes. The plumbing is open and the labor is shared, so it costs less now than as a separate job later. Salt cells do scale up in our hard water and need periodic cleaning, so it is easier water, not zero maintenance.

Can you do the whole thing while we are back east for the summer?

That is a large share of our summer schedule. You leave a signed scope and a gate code, we send photo updates at each stage, and you call us before any change to the plan. Most snowbird owners come home in fall to a finished pool.

Does the city of La Quinta need to approve my remodel?

Cosmetic work like tile, plaster, and coping usually does not need a permit. Structural changes, electrical work, gas lines, and new decking often do. HOA architectural review is separate and applies to anything visible from outside. We handle both.

What should I fix first if my budget is tight?

Anything leaking or cracked comes first. That is structure, not looks. After that, the LED light gives you the biggest visual change per dollar, and the waterline tile is second. Plaster and decking are the big-ticket stages and can wait a season.

Do you charge for a remodel estimate?

No. Remodels, replaster, new builds, and equipment upgrades all get free estimates. The $150 charge applies only to diagnostic visits, where a licensed technician is finding out why something is broken, and that $150 is credited toward the approved repair.
